Official Declaration: What Is Emotional Intelligence? A New Scientific Definition

Defining Emotional Intelligence: Integration of Logic, Emotion, and Long-Term Consequence Awareness

This marks the release of my second research paper on Emotional Intelligence:

Defining Emotional Intelligence: Integration of Logic, Emotion, and Long-Term Consequence Awareness

This paper builds directly on the cognitive mechanism proposed in my first paper:

Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence

(Integrative Thinking produces Emotional Intelligence)

The first paper established the proposed mechanism and my broader cognitive framework.

The present paper focuses specifically on what Emotional Intelligence is at the second layer of that framework

The Central Proposition

We often discuss thinking and emotion separately, even though they are closely related.

My research examines what happens when we consider how the interpretation of a situation can shape the emotional response that follows.

My first paper proposed Integrative Thinking as the cognitive mechanism operating at the first layer and the cognitive engine behind Emotional Intelligence.

Definition of Integrative Thinking as a cognitive mechanism (Megha Monga, 2026):

“Integrative Thinking is a cognitive mechanism where the mind is able to hold multiple interpretations of a situation at the same time without collapsing into extremes, expand those interpretations into their full range of possibilities, and bring them together into one unified understanding before you respond.”

Within this broader claim (Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence), lies my three-layer cognitive framework:

How You Think → How You Feel → How You Act

Inside this framework lies the mechanism that explains how these layers interact:

Layer 1 — Interpretation: Integrative Thinking (How You Think)
↓
Layer 2 — Emotional Output: Emotional Intelligence (How You Feel)
↓
Layer 3 — Behaviour: Intelligent Behaviour (How You Act)

And finally, this mechanism forms the proposed causal chain:

Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence → Intelligent Behaviour

Defining Emotional Intelligence

The second paper focuses on the second layer of this architecture:

Emotional Intelligence — How You Feel.

The paper proposes:

Definition of Emotional Intelligence (Megha Monga, 2026):

“Emotional Intelligence is an integration of logic, emotion, and long-term consequence awareness.”

The three elements are not proposed as sequential stages. They are conceptualized as an integrated construct within the emotional output.

The purpose of this paper is therefore not simply to describe emotionally intelligent behaviour, but to specify the proposed internal composition of Emotional Intelligence within the broader cognitive architecture.

What This Paper Adds

The first paper asked how the cognitive mechanism may operate:

Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence

The second paper asks:

What is the Emotional Intelligence occurring at that second layer?

The proposed answer is:

Logic + Emotion + Long-Term Consequence Awareness → Integrated Emotional Output (Emotional Intelligence)

This is a conceptual and theoretical proposal intended to provide a clearer and distinct definition of Emotional Intelligence.

The paper does not claim that the proposed causal relationship has already been empirically established. Rather, it formalizes the conceptual architecture developed by the author.

The Research Continues

With this release, the second layer of the proposed architecture has now been formally defined.

How You Think → How You Feel → How You Act

Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence → Intelligent Behaviour

Author’s Note

This paper is part of an ongoing independent research programme examining the relationship between cognition, emotional processing, and behaviour. It develops the theoretical proposition established in the author’s previously published research paper that Integrative Thinking produces Emotional Intelligence by further specifying the nature of the Emotional Intelligence that emerges within that cognitive framework.

The conceptualization of Emotional Intelligence presented in this paper, including its characterization as an integration of logic, emotion, and long-term consequence awareness, is the author’s original theoretical proposition. The paper should therefore be read as a conceptual extension of the author’s first paper rather than as a reinterpretation or restatement of existing Emotional Intelligence models.

The references to established scholarship are used to situate and critically distinguish the proposed conceptualization within the existing literature. The use of Integrative Thinking is distinct from the managerial model of integrative thinking commonly taught in business schools. The behavioural case study is illustrative and is not presented as empirical validation of the proposed model.

The causal relationship between Integrative Thinking and Emotional Intelligence, along with the definitions, specific framework, and conceptual architecture presented here, were conceived, developed, and first articulated by Megha Monga. The author retains authorship of the conceptual framework, definitions, and theoretical propositions presented in this paper.

Copying, reproducing, reframing, or presenting this framework, its causal proposition, causal chain, or conceptual architecture as independent theoretical contributions is strictly prohibited. The intellectual framework developed in this research is not public property.
